Beard and scalp hair transplants use the same core technique, but they differ in planning, placement and recovery. My Hair UK offers beard transplants with Dr Munir and Dr Mir, GMC-registered surgeons who specialise in facial hair restoration, at CQC-registered clinics in Manchester and London.
Both procedures use FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). Follicles are taken individually from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is less affected by DHT, and the grafts are extracted before incisions are made in the area being treated. Grafts for a beard always come from the scalp.
Scalp hair grows in natural groups of one to four hairs. Facial hair grows mostly as single hairs at a much flatter angle to the skin, and its direction changes across the cheeks, jawline, chin and upper lip. That's why beard grafts are mostly single-hair units, each placed at a shallow angle to follow the natural direction of growth. Careful angling matters more on the face than anywhere else, because a graft at the wrong angle stands out.
On the scalp, the aim is often good density in a defined area such as the hairline. A beard is planned around your face shape, the areas you want to fill and how full you'd like the result to look. Your surgeon designs the beard with you at your free consultation and explains how many grafts the plan needs.
Facial skin moves constantly with talking, eating and smiling, so the first days of recovery need care. Small scabs form around each graft and usually fall away within about a week to ten days, and mild redness and swelling are common. Follow your surgeon's aftercare instructions closely, including how to wash your face and when you can shave again.
As with scalp transplants, most transplanted beard hairs shed within a few weeks, then regrow from around three months, with the full result at around 12 months.
A beard transplant at My Hair UK costs a fixed £2,899, including the consultation, the procedure, free post-transplant medication and aftercare with surgeon follow-ups. Scalp hair transplants are priced by graft number, from £2,499 for up to 500 grafts to £4,899 for up to 3,500 grafts.
Some men have patchy or sparse facial hair that has never filled in. Others have scars or gaps they'd like to cover. For them, a fuller beard can make a real difference to confidence. You can read more about beard transplants on the My Hair UK website. My Hair UK's average score from patient reviews on reviews.io stands at 4.95 out of 5.
